Fighting for Transparency

An LNP|LancasterOnline reporter uncovered the lack of transparency and local government awareness about hazardous materials being carried across Lancaster County and central Pennsylvania by freight trains.

The result? Shortly after LNP|LancasterOnline published that package of stories, the Pennsylvania attorney general joined other states in calling for federal rules to require railroads to make information about hazardous materials being hauled on their trains available electronically to emergency responders.

Shining a Light on Housing Safety

Lancaster City changed its policy for how it distributed free smoke detectors after LNP|LancasterOnline reported on homeowners who said the city had declined their request for free smoke detectors.

Helping People in Need

Linda Gordon read in LNP|LancasterOnline about Tasos Marinos, who urgently needed a kidney donation. Gordon stepped up and donated one of her kidneys, saving Marinos’ life.

Why Supporting Local News Matters

LNP|LancasterOnline produces truthful, fact-based, fully transparent reporting about local issues that matter. We are the watchdog for the people of Lancaster County. Since 2005, the United States has lost more than a third of its newspapers.

Research shows that when the availability of local news declines, there are serious and measurable negative impacts on communities:

The cost of government borrowing goes up.

The number and salaries of government employees goes up.

Police clear fewer violent crimes.

Less federal money is allocated locally.

Fewer people run for office.

Voter turnout drops.

Fewer people join civic organizations.

Fewer people contact elected officials.

FAQs

What makes you different from other news media?

We are locally owned and operated. In a world where large corporations increasingly gobble up local newspapers, LNP|LancasterOnline, and our parent company WITF, remain proudly independent. This stands in stark contrast to most areas of the US, which no longer have their own, locally owned news media. According to the Local News Initiative, “more than half of all daily newspapers and a quarter of other newspapers are owned by the ten largest chains.” Ownership of the largest chains tends to be corporate hedge funds with no interest in, or loyalty to, local communities.
